Striving to emerge from the shadows of the late German romantic composers, the young Englishman Ralph Vaughan Williams composed his Piano Quintet in 1903. He withdrew this work before his widow allowed it to be performed again some 80 years later in 1999. Composers have long been inspired by nature’s beauty – the landscape, sounds of storms, birdcalls, and flowing rivers, have all been incorporated into famous pieces of music. In this final concert of the festival, you’ll hear the bubbling streams of Austria in Schubert’s gorgeous “Trout” quintet, and the Australian premiere of a piece depicting the Australian landscape by Australian composer Andrew Howes. Violinist Ike See will send you into the freezing North Queensland air with Vivaldi’s “Winter”, from the famous “Four Seasons”.
